BBP NEWS: The 74th State Athletics Championship 2026, being held at the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Kolkata, created history on Day 2 (Friday)as athletes delivered an extraordinary display of talent by breaking 11 Meet Records in a single day—the highest number of meet records ever recorded in a single day in the history of the State Athletics Championships.
The landmark performances highlighted the remarkable rise in the standard of athletics across West Bengal, with athletes from various districts and leading clubs rewriting the championship record books.
Among the standout performances, Tahura Khatun of Mohun Bagan Athletic Club stormed to victory in the Women's U20 400m, clocking 54.83 seconds to establish a new Meet Record, surpassing Shyama Mandal's previous mark of 55.00 seconds, set in 2022.
In the 20km Race Walk, Jbear Munda of East Bengal Club bettered his own Meet Record by finishing in 1:38:16, improving upon his previous record of 1:42:47.9, which he had set in 2025.
Young athletes continued to impress as Soumik Ghosh (Chandannagar Sub-Divisional)cleared 1.69m in the Boys U16 High Jump, eclipsing Soumya Mondal's previous record of 1.63mestablished in 2025.
In the Men's U18 Discus Throw, Swapnil Dutta (Jalpaiguri) produced a superb throw of 51.75m, bettering Bikram Biswas'record of 49.26m set in 2024.
The Boys U16 1000m Race Walkalso saw history as Sovan Bhowmik (Purba Medinipur)clocked 3:50.56, comfortably surpassing Deepjyoti Sarkar's previous Meet Record of 4:00.00 from 2024.
The Men's U23 800m Final produced another memorable performance with Md. Mahasin Awal (Uttar Dinajpur) finishing in 1:52.60 to establish a new Meet Record, breaking the previous championship mark held by Sayan Karmakar (Mohun Bagan Athletic Club)since 2023.
In the Women's U23 800m, Rosni Das of East Bengal Club dominated the race and set a new Meet Record of 2:15.66, improving upon Moumita Roy's previous record of 2:22.80, recorded in 2025.
The Senior Men's Long Jump witnessed one of the longest-standing records being rewritten as Amitra Ghosh (East Bengal Club) leapt 7.69m, surpassing Sanjoy Rai's championship record of 7.58m, which had stood unbeaten since 2001.
Another thrilling performance came in the Senior Men's 800m, where Argha Gharui (Mohun Bagan Athletic Club) clocked 1:50.77, eclipsing the previous Meet Record of 1:51.50 held by Md. Shakil (Income Tax) since 2019.
In the Men's U23 Long Jump, Dablu Roy (Jalpaiguri) registered a leap of 7.14m, narrowly improving upon Arijit Paul's previous Meet Record of 7.12m set in 2023.
Completing the record-breaking day, Gourab Bouri (East Bengal Club) produced a sensational throw of 60.90m in the Boys U16 Javelin Throw, shattering the previous Meet Record of 49.65m set by Bhiki Barman (Jalpaiguri) in 2025.
The unprecedented achievement of 11 Meet Records in a single dayreflects the exceptional depth of talent emerging from across West Bengal and marks a historic milestone for the championship.
